Yes their 90's material is really a lot more rudimentary in style although they still put out some absolute classics like Petitioning the Empty Sky and the Poacher Diaries that laid the groundwork for the metalcore/mathcore genre. Jane Doe is a big step up from that sound and I think of everything they've released since then as Converge 2.0, if that makes sense; tighter songwriting, more ambitious production, etc.

@ILIVEONETID I love both, the one and only difference I see is guitar toning, Dillinger plays in E, which is not that metal-ish, but still they kick ass. Maybe the vocals too. :D
