Dear Bagpiper - my earlier remarks apply only to starting with the first verse: i.e.: "Bring the good old bu---" I noticed that Mr. Hicks starts with the chorus. For me, the bagpipe version is better when starting with first verse. Hope I'm not confusing you! :-)

Dear Bagpipeplayer: You will have to teach yourself to play this on the pipes, as no book of pipe music includes it (and I have a ton of it.) If you know the tune (can hum, sing, or whistle it) you can easily play it by ear. It starts with "b" - first note at the top of the chanter the chanter, and continues straight down the chanter to the second note, and third. Then you work back up to the top note. For the next note you will have to experiment, but it should really be easy. Hope this helps.

My dad was born in Georgia in 1884 - of strong Confederate heritage - yet he loved to play this song on his banjo, and sing it. He was not alone! Have just "discovered" you and have already subscribed. :-) (It also sounds great on the Highland bagpipe!)

@Positively Negative Jubilee is a Biblical reference of Leviticus 25. The African slave being adapted into Christian Culture through a couple generations would find them selves in similar circumstances as the Israelite under Pharaoh. The Jubilee is a restoring of property and freedom every 49 years according to Lev 25. Hence the liberating of the Slave was indeed a Jubilee as far as they were concerned.

Positively Negative, in reference to your question, "bring the jubilee" is referring to relief from slavery.

thank you so much for this, some of the prettiest sounds i know of right here. trying to figure it out so i can play it myself, so thanks for the tuning and clear picture! i was wondering.. what do old time singers refer to when they mention jubilee? i'm not american so i can't be expected to know these things.
