Beautiful song, beautiful voice, terrible arrangement. You could goose step to this tempo.

These people are helping me to learn this song. This song is about my mother who is soon to be among the last roses of summer. Since the lovely are sleeping, she will soon go to sleep with them. I hope that soon I will follow, when friendships decay and from love’s shinning circle, the gems drop away. As she did, I have lived a good life. When true hearts are withered and fond ones are flown, I’ll be grateful for the last rose of summer and the life she gave me that I have known.

I love Moya's smoky alto take on this song, usually done in an extremely "sweet" style in a soprano register. The instrumentals on this one, though... I'd love to just hear what the vocal with the guitar sounded like without the sort-of-harpsichordy keyboard and added effects.

My parents introduced me to this song 60 years ago - they loved the wonderful Deanna Durbin version but she was not the first. But there have been many beautiful versions - shows what a beautiful song it is - so who wrote it?

this song is based on the poem penned by Thomas Moore and was set into an old Irish folk tune.it has since been sung and interpreted by various artists...the words are beautifully painful and sad...and the folksy tune gives it that calm feeling of resignation to life's eventual end. .

Yeats wrote the poem Maura Brennan and Clannad sang this 40 years ago when We were all young. I never go through Ocober without carefully picking the last rose in my garden and playing this version of the song

Be it as it may - the melody is wonderful and surely puts a spell on you, whatever version you chose. I knew the tune from my father and just learned that it was the song of the last summer rose. Kind greetings from Germany.

i prefer this, so soft and makes me very nostalgic of my childhood in the english countryside

It's nicely done but definitely doesn't touch me so deeply as the sung versions of the 30ies, i. e. Joan Sutherland or Deanna Durbin. Just listen on YT ;-)

@gameball2003 Actually, this wasn't even a song to begin with. It's a poem from 1805. It was first turned into a song in 1807 - and has pretty much kept the same beautiful and touching melody for 200+ years, no matter who covers it. Artists today can't touch masterpieces like this, no matter how hard they "try".
