I agree that the best version of this song with orchestra is the "Land of Make Believe" album but the small combo rendition off the "Live at the Village Gate" is incredible as well.

I absolutely love this version, off of the 1981 "Tarantella" album. Chuck still had many of the late 70s Quartet with him and this, of course, is with nearly a full orchestra of the very BEST musicians available... Great stuff!

The original Chuck Mangione Quartet recording of this with Steve Gadd and Gerry Niewood is wonderful. Mercury Records.

That was a great performance. They scored very low that year at DCI though:\

I'm playing this for marching band, and I feel like everyone's going to be comparing us to the Blue Devils.

The evolution away from a youth activity to an industry is something that manifested itself through DCI. It became only about DCI and who could afford the newest equipment and designer uniforms and professional drill designers, etc. What started as many corps getting together to make their own rules turned into a governing body interested in promotion and profit. Are there any top corps out there without corporate sponsorship any more?

Yeah....the general economy and rising costs of operation did a number on a lot of corps that didn't have the wherewithal to cope. Sometimes it was ban financial management, sometimes lack of successful fundraising, etc. Some people always want to blame DCI for it all. The tour itself IS a factor, but DCI was not the only nail in so many coffins.

IC. Thanks for the explanation. Yeah, back then there were a bunch more corps than now. Gone are the Northstars and the 27th Lancers. Boston Crusaders I think are still here. There used to be a plethora of minor corps, but I never see them around anymore. I can understand the restructuring and changes.

Understood. Allentown was it's own major event (DCI East, I think), and there were a LOT of corps in the region back then, so they had to have a prelims/finals setup. But, Allentown was not prelims for the championships. It might be closer to nats week in some years, depending on where tour's going. In 07m with finals in Pasadena, I think it was fairly early in the season.

Sadly I never marched but was a fan of corps, so the ins and outs of DC escape me.. I thought Allentown was a prelim for finals and happened about 2 weeks before finals. My memory must be shot. It WAS almost 30 years ago. Either way, great show!!!! I still remember driving through the parking lot at the mall there and playing Devils in the car. A few of the other corps members gave us a little razzing. I think Madison, but I'm not sure. It was great to watch warm ups in the lot.

Thanks....I don't think we DID Allentown that year, tho. (goes to FromThePressbox). Nope...we went from Lynn, MA to Garfield, NJ, to Landsdale, PA, to Atlanta, GA. Allentown was about a month before you saw us...we were still in California on 1st tour. Thanks, tho. La Fiesta was HELL of a tune to crank out!

Maynard would be proud of the 84 offering though. I got to see you guys at Manning Bowl, Lynn MA in 84 where La Fiesta brought the crowd to it's feet. I think it was two weeks before Allentown.
