On this day in 1961 {April 28th} 'The Biggest Show of Stars of '61' played at the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis, Missouri...The show's headliner was Chubby Check; and at the time he had three records on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, "Pony Time" was at #13, "Good, Good Lovin'" at #53, and "(Dance the) Mess Around" at #79...Of the three, "Pony Time" was the biggest hit, it peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks} on February 27th, 1961, "Good, Good Lovin'" peaked at #43 and "(Dance the) Mess Around" would reached #24...Other acts on the bill were Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, the Shirelles, the Drifters, Chuck Jackson, and the Shells...The next night the tour would play McCormick Place in Chicago...

On this day in 1961 {March17th} Chubby Checker headlined a rock 'n roll show at the Regal Theater in Chicago, IL...At the time his "Pony Time" was in its third and final week at #1 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it had entered the chart on January 23rd, 1961 and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100... On March 7th, 1961 it also reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...The original version of the song by Don Covay* and the Goodtimers was also on the Top 100 at that time, at #66; plus another 'Pony' song was at #60, "Pony Express" by Danny and the Juniors..."Pony Time" was the second of his two #1 records; the first of course was "The Twist", and exactly a year later on March 17th, 1962 it was at #24 and nine weeks earlier it was at #1 for the second time... * Mr. Covay was the composer of “Pony Time”…
