Chris Thile plays well with others -- he came into prominence thanks to his fiery and virtuosic mandolin playing with Nickel Creek. Since, he's performed as part of the band The Punch Brothers, as a duo with guitarist Michael Daves, and with the all-star cast of musicians behind The Goat Rodeo Sessions, including Edgar Meyer, Stuart Duncan, and cellist Yo Yo Ma.

But on his latest recording, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, Thile stands alone, translating the works of Bach — originally composed for solo violin -- with exceptional precision on mandolin.

Hear Thile perform the Presto movement of Bach's Sonata No. 1 in G minor.

Masterful! Virtuoso means "able to make the instrument sound like a human voice."This artist has achieved virtuosity.

The fourth note of measure forty-three is correctly a G, not an F as played here.Otherwise, a strong performance.

I don't think it's histrionics, I think he's just feeling the music. Look at Glenn Gould, used to hum as he played.

Such a skilled player. I just wish he didn't flail around like an idiot whenever he plays.

I agree with what Chris said about the audience being over reserved when playing classical music like Bach etc... Why do not the people get into the music, and feel it? I mean it is heavy music. Awesome

The difference between a classical player and a popular music player doing this kind of piece is that a "classical musician" wouldn't bother with all the facial and body histrionics. Amazing performance, but I don't think dancing is helping much.

Sure, Chris has been truley gifted by god to write the way he does, but maybe leading a band isn't your thing and you perhaps would be better off playing for a master in collaberation

Now hold on man! Your going to give up a passion for that? You think you lack talent. Let me define talent for you. The natrual love and passion to strive for something. Now let me tell you what Chris Thilie is. A man who has spent his time since the primarys moments of a musicians careerer playing the mandoline. By the ages of 13-15 it is best for one to decide their instrament. Then after these years if they have not decided, the instrament they choose will be lacking in skill. You learn and preform best young. Don't wait and end up learning many instraments, (chello, bass, violin, mandolin, guitar, banjo, dobro, saxaphone, piano, bass clarenete, etc.) and spreading yourself thin. It is good to have a knowledge of all the instraments, but first y must choose one to master. It is not shallow to line them all up and feel them to then decide. Learn to read music on them all and then decide the instrament you want to dedicate that part of your musicianship to. LEARN TO READ MUSIC FIRST ON WHATEVER YOU DECIDE, MOVE TO NASHVILLE AND GET A COACH.

Someone hit the 'dislike' button?Oh well. Perhaps they are a rap fanatic... or drunk.. or both....I have thought of taking up Mandolin... but I would never get to be that good.Guess I'll stick to being a bass player...
