When I was in school a long time ago in SE Wales Welsh was taught for 1 hour a week for 1 year. That means I can count to 10, it was just about all the teacher knew. The Conservative government at the time was trying to bring it back in but SE Wales was mostly Labour run and blocked everything that government tried to do. When we ended up with that nightmare of a Labour government their lackey's took it on board as if it was a new idea and we now have the schools, triple dip recession though.

The problem with this fashion is that these children are being taught not through their mother tongue but through a language code that they have to master on top of their education.

A very high percentage of speakers only a few miles to the west of Neath such as pontardawe,gwaun cae gurwen,Glanamman,Ammanford and from there on.Think the figures for the Neath area are something like 20 per cent but only a few miles to the east this falls dramatically.

Thanks for the info. Languages not my thing... I'll never get far with learning the language.. but just hearing the sound of it spoken is somehow pleasing.

Percentage wise more Welsh spoken in North but most Welsh speaking are in South West Wales.750,000 Welsh speakers now.The place where you find little or no Welsh spoken is in the south east of Wales in places such as Caerleon.But even in the south east of Wales there is a resurgence with thousands of young children now being taught through the medium of Welsh.

I left the place (Caerleon) when I was 8. I don't remember people speaking Welsh at all. My late parents told a tale of a trip on a motor scooter.. not being able to get directions from Welsh speaking country folk? I understand the language did get a boost.. a revival?
