I remember listening this the first time. I couldn't have been no older than 10 in the 4th Grade. The song was part of a play put together by the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) group. The play itself had a few laughs here and there on a girl coming of age thinking about boys and other things. She had a very loving mother and a cool older brother. They didn't have much but they were happy one in the same and well, the play itself revolves entirely around addiction. In the end, she lost her brother to drunk driving. He died in a crash days after her mother passed away from long cancer. The message of the play was pretty straight forward about addiction. "Once you start, you may never stop" they say. Other than that, the song by Cat Stevens was a revolving theme around the play on how life is short. ):
