Also you dont need religion to be a good person and live a good life. cat stevens once said he would feel its ok to physically kill Salman Rushdie. a man of peace? he once stood for peace, now he's a stranger to peace and calls himself yusuf. search for it on youtube, its on the BBC tapes.

Cat Stevens/ Yusuf Islam was as brilliant singer, song writer and tunesmith as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell , and Judy Collins of the day . Fewer people listened to his words , cause , and understanding. "Granny" , "Father" and Son are not his best songs , but do tell a lot.

Islam is a beautiful religion not hear from non-Muslims, but Hear from Muslims themselves and I advise you to listen and watch straps Religious in the biography of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) chanted with me (there is no god but God and Mohammed is his prophet)

There is a mistake in the translation Year: uttered in Arabic (alsanah), a number of the number of days 136 The intention here is uttered (alsonah) which follow the Prophet Muhammad in all things of his life

A lovesong addressed to his own grandmother? I suppose it is a change to hear a Muslim get excited by an older woman.

Islam and Muslims are not necessarily bad or backwards, no matter what may be written on one line of the Quran, and no matter what area of the world any given Muslims live in. I hope this has helped you cut through the mounds of misinformation and misinterpretation of and about Muslims.

That interpretive change may well relate to interpretion of Quran's statements about women. By the same logic, because Stevens is not part of the group whose interpretation has understandably been shaped by horrible circumstances, he likely doesn't interpret the Quran the same way they do - explaining how he can be Muslim and not believe in regressive practices toward women. Also, not all Muslims in the affected region show sexism (example: Egypt's major revolutionary, Wael Ghonim).

There's no reason to believe that changing the base socioeconomic conditions of Muslims in the Middle East wouldn't change those Muslims' views on the Quran's instructions about women. After all, decentralized religions are what the cultures of their practitioners make them, so if those people had better chances in life, that improvement would change their culture, consequently changing their interpretation of their religion.

The Old Testament talks about stoning women, an ancient practice long, long gone in Jewish practice. But even the New Testament has sexism in it: when God needs to inform someone that the baby Mary's pregnant with is not Joseph's but his own, does he tell Mary? No, he tells Joseph, and there is an implication in Matthew that this is the first anyone hears of the matter. Think about that for a moment.

The fact that western treatment has resulted in the current extremism is actually best shown in jihadism. Know what jihad actually is? It's the "struggle against oppression". If they consider fighting against oppression to be fighting the west, then we can clearly see they blame the west for oppressing them - and after seeing the way the US backed dictators like the Shah and Mubarak, it's not hard to understand why. Yes, there are sexist parts of Quran, but there are sexist parts of the Bible.

If we accept that Muslims living in the Middle East now are the descendents of those who lived there then, then why has those peoples' interpretation of Islam changed? The most obvious answer, to me, is current socioeconomic conditions. The west took that land, a tribal land, and subdivided the land into states that don't run along tribal lines. Both imperialism and capitalist needs (oil) has caused the west to back dictatorial regimes against democratic/socialist movements (see Iran, 1954).

Also, on the subject of Muslim practices, Muslim regimes have often proven much more accepting of other religions than, say, Christian regimes. Under a Muslim regime, early middle ages Spain was a center of learning and knowledge in which Christians, and Jews were also accepted. Once Catholicism took over, it converted, or brutally killed Spain's Muslims and Jews in a little event called the Inquisition. Muslim tolerance and Christian intolerance was a pattern, even in the Middle East.

In a decentralized religion, the way the religion is practiced says more about the practitioners than the religion. If Cat believes in overarching concepts of Islam, it's his right to do so, without believing in stoning women to death. These days, many Jews support gay marriage, something the Bible warns against. Therefore, do to the nature of Islam, Cat being Islamic does not mean he supports any given weird practice of any given Islamic extremist.

Lots of religious texts say ridiculous things. The bible says that gay people should be stoned to death. You say that's been "redacted"; in Catholocism, a centralized government allows for "redaction" of certain passages. Islam is uncentralized: every practitioner decides which aspects to focus on. Therefore, it's impossible for the more ridiculous statements to be "redacted"; however, it is possible for practitioners to decide not to put in practice certain laws. Judaism works the same way.
