Can you remember the times

That you have held your head high

And told all your friends of your Indian claim

Proud good lady and proud good man

Your great-great grandfather from Indian blood sprang

And you feel in your heart for these ones

Oh it's written in books and in song

That we've been mistreated and wronged

Well over and over I hear the same words

From you good lady and you good man

Well listen to me if you care where we stand

And you feel you're a part of these ones

When a war between nations is lost

The loser, we know, pays the cost

But even when Germany fell to your hands

Consider dear lady, consider dear man

You left them their pride and you left them their land

And what have you done to these ones

Has a change come about Uncle Sam

Or are you still taking our lands

A treaty forever George Washington signed

He did dear lady, he did dear man

And the treaty's being broken by Kinzua Dam

And what will you do for these ones

Oh, it's all in the past you can say

But it's still going on here today

The government now want the Iroquois land

That of the Senaca and the Cheyenne

It's here and it's now you can help us dear man

Now that the buffalo's gone.

This has gone straight into my favourites. I'm so sorry for all first nations peoples all over the world that have been exploited & abused over the years by so called civilised white nations. How one human being can treat others like this is still something my heart can't accept

Or have no heart. Seems a very common condition. No knowledge, no empathy, no respect.

Depth has nothing to do with singing in tune. Buffy's depth lies in her lyrics and voice, which is unconventional as she uses a persistent vibrato and also doesn't have regard for the western traditional tones and style of singing. She also has great passion in her voice, as you can hear in this song and practically everything she has ever done. She's one of few artists who are truly sincere.

the u.s govt slaughtered thousand and thousands of bisons and just left them to rot...the purpose was to rid the food supply of the Indian.

In 1961, President Kennedy denied a request by the Seneca Indians to stop Kinzua Dam being built on land in northwestern Pennsylvania. It had been given to Chief Cornplanter and his people, the Senecas, by President Washington in (sources vary from 1791 to 1796) when they were displaced from land farther east. It was promised to "him and his heirs forever", and ancestors (Indian and white) were buried there. Some graves were moved, some remained, and the residents were displaced again.

I've always thought it meant that the Indian lands were taken during the era of the buffalo, which the Indians depended upon for sustenance. Now, this is the are of no buffalo, and what will happen now? And what is still being done in this era?

What does she mean when she says "Now that the buffalo's gone"?

I have thought about the changed lyrics. I think she might have rewritten them to apply to Canada as well as the USA.

Buffy Sainte Marie is every bit as important as Joan Baez. Her songs are so powerful!
