Gonna be honest this is one of those songs that makes you think about things that happened years ago. It's quite amazing how a song that is completely unrelated to you, make you think about the good and bad memories of your childhood, it's very powerful. Thats how I see it.

After reading a lot the the comments below: Of course, Bruce is making a comment about the grim reality of certain cities and towns losing their identity from loss of industry and jobs. But I really don't believe he's trying to make a political statement. This is a beautiful, emotional ballad about the attachment people have to their communities. My original hometown was Truro IA; and like a lot a small farm towns; it essentially vanished when the agricultural and economic climate changed since the 70's. It's a sad loss, but not necessarily an indictment of any system. Just fiscal reality, and evidence that the world is always changing. Certainly, the US has shipped a ton of manufacturing jobs overseas; and there is a more than a little "indicting" due around that. But if you listen to this tune and find a reason to get riled about economic policy and partisan politics, I think you're rather missing the point of the song.

what Springsteen is singing about are the lost jobs in the the steel mills, textiles, auto etc.however, today there are plenty of jobs in the knowledge industry like in the high tech sector; there are lots of jobs in the oil & gas sector as well. in fact there are plenty of these jobs available in America, but there are not enough Americans who have the skills to fill these positions. so don't lament, go get yourself some skills and get yourself a good job.

This song makes me misty eyed. It's so true. Look at what's happened to industrial America today and all the jobs lost. Towns and cities all over the country are like this, boarded up store fronts and it seems no one wants to come here anymore. The jobs are gone and they're not coming back. How true.
