I respect Springsteen for doing his research... I don't care for his music all that much, but I do respect HIS respect for the roots of what he does.

The original artist for this song is not Harry Choates as many people seem to think, but rather is the Breaux sisters--Amadie, Ophy, and Cleoma Breaux. Harry Choates did a version of this song in 1946, but the Breaux version dates back to 1928. I'd strongly recommend you listen to their original version, if you love the song--it's hearbtreakingly beautiful and very haunting.
