I thought it was funny that the guy at :54 decided to lift his hands in praise at the line about the devil. Must not have been paying attention to the lyric, haha.

The Almighty does nothing without reason, though the frail mind of man cannot always explain the reason

A great way of introducing words that have stood the test of time. However early on in the song the first verse which describes the power of satan uses the words, "For still our ancient foe, conspires to work us woe, his craft and power are great", at which point a bearded gentleman raised his arms. I wonder if he was actually listening to the words.

"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" (German, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott) is one of the best known of Martin Luther's hymns. Luther wrote the words and composed the melody sometime between 1527 and 1529. The words are a paraphrase of Psalm 46.The most popular English version is A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing and was translated by Frederick H. Hedge in 1853.

This is a great remake... I recall singing an original version of this Martin Luther song (1527) w/ everyone joining, in a humble small town church (I termed it "cowboy church" w/ wooden pews.. picture your horse tied up outside to a post). The song actually is powerful and it seemed to raise the roof of that little church at times (especially during tough times). People breaking up... or tears would flow w/ Joy at times, this song can be powerfully uplifting (maybe because truth is... : ). And we "can endure" even though "the body they may kill" because "God's Truth is with us still"

nice. real nice. tis lil hit single was written some time in the early 1520's. sung by the luthurans as they went forth to defend themselves against the armise of the church of rome. it was a small event called years after ' the thirty years war'. 'we' (the lutherans) won. we were not exterminated, and we flower forth through out the landscape even today. we still have martyr missionaries in africa, south america , etcetera. truly luther's idea of god being 'our mighty fortress' is true even today, in so called modern times. thanks martin, thanks jesus, and thank you very much god almighty in the heavens Above. love joe p.s. also thanks holy ghost for abiding with me always and in all ways. j

Nice arrangement - not rushed, very singable. But why did he update the lyrics - words like "bullwark" changed to "stronghold" and "Lord Sabbaoth" to "Lord of Hosts". It's good to leave unusual or difficult words in old songs. If you wonder what they mean then look them up, but don't "dumb down" the song.

Fab Martin Luther! Indeed a mighty fortress is our God with Christ on our side.

Say "bulwark". For heaven's sake, there's no need to dumb it down.

Irene "for still our ancient foe..." he is talking about the evil one, satan, how there is none ON EARTH (us) as powerful or crafty as he and none his equal! He is a true deceiver and only one greater then he and that's Our Lord, Our Mighty Fortress!!
