Listening to Brendan Perry brings both joy and pain. Most of the time it is the latter. Recently I suffered again from one of my dreaded insomnia episodes. They have appeared throughout my life, and the intervals have been increasing as of late. They come most notably when an incessant cerebral pulse, if you will, wells up from the recesses of my inner faculty. It is during this time that my fleshly tabernacle experiences a sort of 'trifectic' seizure. My mind, heart and soul ache at once from some caustic electrically charged fluid emanating from the deep tissue areas, and coming out of my ears burning me violently. The insomnia always ensues, and the only remedy is the following of very moist exhalations against a mirror. Someone breathes and writes in an ancient tongue! Well, it is at times like this that I call upon a very old man, a rabbi named Elihu Tekhiya." Another adventure? Please allow me to accompany you!" We have been friends for years now. "Let me see what you wrote down. Are you sure you are not descended from our fathers? Because you writing of Hebrew is impeccable. The translation is easy enough, "Beth Yeshurun A. P. 2." I tell Elihu, "I know that place. It's the cemetery on Allen Parkway and we have to be there at 2. I'm thinking in the a.m. Why else keep me awake. "I have to go with you." I nodded. On our way up there, my van stalled. We walked another mile or so. When we got there, it was serenely quiet, except for some strange oddly inflected chatter. Elihu could not contain himself. He ran towards, what I saw were two men, one very tall, the other too old to be living. Elihu spoke biblical Hebrew. He received quizzical looks. The tall one said, "Ah! You are speaking in the second tongue. We only use the first." Ehihu said, "The first?" "Yes. It died at the tower of Babel, but Zacharias, after learning it, prefers to speak in that manner." He asked me to bring him here. The person he is paying his respects to was the last descendant of his wife Elizabeth." Elihu was overcome with reverent fear. "And you are?" "You should know me by now," the tall one replied. "Mephibosheth is smiling and he is proud of you Elihu." Zecharias was also smiling at him. He cried and thanked me over and over. "You're welcome, I guess. This was all for you?" The tall one walked to me and said, "You are very kind to sacrifice your time and energy for this man. It will not go unnoticed." At that moment I became so drowsy. Elihu went to get the van. It started right up. He was acting like a school boy. He drove me home and I slept for three days. When I woke up, I read the note he left me, "Let me know when an episode strikes you again!" "May I recover from the last bout, please?"
