Hi - It dampens the e-string to stop it ringing. It is a "very naughty" technique (according to some) as you can't use your fingers like your supposed to with the thumb round the neck, but I say as long as the line works and your hand isn't hurting, then it's a good way of getting a slightly different funk going than if you mute with the RH (thumb or fingers). Cheers.
