My dad used to sing that when I was just a kid, and it always brings a tear to my eye, cause he's dead now, and I don't know if he made it to heaven, or not, so I don't know if I'll see him again or not !! RIP, DAD !!!

+Jersey2tall86 I'm sorry it took me awhile to respond, I couldn't find the Reply button. LOL! Anyway, I do have Bobby Horton's The Siege of Vicksburg, and The Year of Jubilo by Pete Seeger.

You don't happen to have The Siege of Vicksburg (Listen to the Parrot Shells) by Bobby Horton, do you? Been looking for someone to post that one and can't find it! Same thing with "The Year of Jubilo"

Darlin...PT Beauregard, Robert Edward Lee, and John Bell Hood were all Confederate generals during the American Civil War. Can't tell you about Mary and Rosa Lee though. I live just outside Fort Hood, Texas named after General Hood.

This isn't the original lyrics... It's not "soldier." It's "darky." Everything else seems right. This is the civil war adaptation. Sounds like.

My mother is literally a "Yellow Rose of Texas", however the original lyrics aren't about a soldier. It's a minstrel song, that I happen to like. I don't think art should disappear just because political correctness. History happened, if I'm not trippin, I don't see why others are. Heck, I wouldn't trip if they used the real lyrics either. It's just a song

Dearest Mary and Rosa Lee were real people or just names? And Beauregard, Bobbie Lee and the gallant Hood of Texas?

Do white people call mixed race people white?NO.You say 1 drop makes you a black person? So going by that equation my original comment is true...

Emily West was a woman of mixed race who was born free in Connecticut. She traveled to Texas in her late teens and was captured by the Mexican army. Legend has it that General Santa Ana was seduced by her and distracted when the Texans attacked at San Juacinto.
