Amazon.com Editorial Review

Gotta Serve Somebody - The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan is all about redemption. That's apparent enough in the music, where the struggle between sin and salvation is inherent in the tunes that are interpreted here by a host of superb gospel artists. But in a larger sense, the very existence of this DVD (and the Grammy-nominated CD that preceded it in 2003) can be viewed as redemption for Dylan himself, who weathered another controversy and emerged, if not triumphant, then certainly vindicated. When he plugged in an electric guitar in 1965, he was labeled "Judas" by the folkie faithful; ironically, when he turned to Jesus some 15 years later, proclaiming himself born again and releasing Slow Train Coming and Saved, the outcry was even louder. But once again Dylan has the last laugh, as now, a quarter of a century after the fact, it's clear that the material on those recordings was his strongest not only since 1975's Blood on the Tracks but perhaps since his '60s heyday. The quality of the songs lies in what Jerry Wexler, co-producer of the two Dylan albums, describes as the "immaculate funk" of the music, and especially in the heartfelt simplicity (especially by Dylan standards) and emotional directness of the lyrics; clearly, that's what attracted great gospel singers like Shirley Caesar (singing "Gotta Serve Somebody," the most recognized song on the two Dylan albums), Dottie Peoples (a powerful version of the beautiful "I Believe in You"), the Mighty Clouds of Joy (a rockin', sanctified "Saved"), the Fairfield Four (the stirring, a cappella "Are You Ready"), and the angel-voiced Aaron Neville ("Saving Grace") to this project. We also get Dylan himself, performing "When He Returns" at a 1980 concert, along with an animated rendering of his original "Gotta Serve Somebody." Hallelujah, y'all. --Sam Graham

My favorite of all the compilations --the one I find the most illuminating as well as enjoyable—is a selection of Dylan's "Christian period" songs, Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan, released by Sony/Columbia in 2003. Featuring major artists such as Shirley Caesar and Aaron Neville, as well as groups such as the Mighty Clouds of Joy, the album also includes an amusing back-and-forth between Dylan and Mavis Staples, preceding their duet performance of "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking." The album's excellent liner notes, written in part by Tom Piazza, link each song to a bible passage, underscoring how Dylan's engagement with Christianity as well as with American sacred song did not end in the early 1980's and how it continues to this day. --Sean Wilentz; Bob Dylan in America

Bob Dylan's Gospel songs, widely reviled when new, have steadily grown in stature and acceptance over the years. Here in the hands of Gospel greats, likely the folks best suited to do them, they come up stronger than ever. Strong recommendation. Much better and more gripping than I expected. -Sing Out!

You folks should do a bit more investigating of peoples intentions, meaning etc, this is not a gospel song. Do you know what gospel means? By definition this is not a gospel song. And Dylan in an interview with Ed Bradley on 60 minutes admitted and did so seriously, he made a deal with the Devil to be famous. And he continues to play for audiences to "keep up his end of the bargain". That song is the opposite of what you think it is people. As many of you know, The Gospel is the Good News Jesus Christ brought to a lost world, and Thorough Jesus, (He is the way, the truth and the Life, and NO ONE comes to the Father but by him John 14:6) The lyrics to this Dylan song tells you have to serve somebody, those options are a violation of the first two commandments. Supposedly according to 3 different professional public survey's 80 % of Amercan's say they are Christian. Yet of those same people, only about 10% say that "God" is the most important person in their lives. If you know scripture, then you know that Jesus, God the father, and the Holy Spirit is One God, and God must be the first in our lives. So if you're a Christian, only one option to who you serve, The man Christ Jesus, who died for you and rose the third day. God loved you so much he gave his only Son, Jesus.

Just discovered this after reading the L.A. Times article about re-issue of Dylan's 1969 Gospel Album. Love those singers from L.A.'s sanctified churches. Someone here wrote that the phrase "sanctified" is pretentious. Since six years ago when the comment was written, I hope this person has learned that 'sanctified" is a term used to describe the exhilarating, electrifying, soul-stirring music that emanates from many black churches.

I'm middle aged man who had the pleasure of having these Dylan albums played for me by my father when I was young. They now mean more than ever to me. I get chills, filled with the Holy Spirit.

this is Paul Williams, doing the commentary, who I knew when he lived in Sonoma, CA., some years ago.. tragically, he had a brain injury during a bicycle accident which progressed into Alzheimer's Disease, and he died recently. Paul wrote books about Dylan and was the founder of Crawdaddy magazine.

Bob Dylan, an urban prophet with the gift of lyric. It's refreshing to see someone find themselves through their gifts. Great songs with pure spiritual meaning.

Dylan became a Christian and he wrote his only Christian album. Tragically, He was booed off the stages in Seattle, Portland San Fran, LA, and Phoenix. He quit. Eventually he rejected faith in Christ too.

I can see what you mean about Lennon's song but I've always found it oddly moving. Yes, it's fearful and confused but I think that's what it's supposed to articulate...we can all find ourselves in that position - it's all too human and JL found Bob's position too judgmental. The bit at the end where he says you have to remember your mother is, whilst comical, almost desperate in its desire to find some meaning. I say all this as both a Christian and huge bob Dylan fan.

arrant nonsense.

In Lennon's lyrics he sounds like nothing more than a bitter and even fearful man. Speaking about serving himself cause no one else will ("nobody gonna do for you"). Then he goes on to contradict that fear by saying he fights for "love and glory". Love and fear don't mix, unless of course it is the love of the self. I don't exactly know what fighting for glory is supposed to mean. The whole undertone of the song is one that doesn't promote love or unity, but rather animosity and discrimination.

whats happening here is that you are first acknowledging that lennon is talking only about not serving god, and then you are making an ad hoc extension of that to imply that lennon is some sort of randian and condones complete selfishness, which is completely unjustified and a strawman of what he actually said. your comment is fallacious.
