Working the Concept:

The concept behind this song stems from the sound track for the film titled, "Stranger". A thriller based on one man's quest to discover the truth behind his thoughts and desires.

"Turn to Dust" was identified as a potential single track by Origami Studio's owner and producer Steven Manovski.

The Process.

The single version of this track has been a work in progress over the last two years with many hours spent discussing the direction the song has been pulled and whether the intent and story still remain true to the film and sound track. The result has been outstanding.

Work on the single version began by striping back the piano instrumentation and focussing on the vocal. Looking at the chord structure and resetting the timing overall was next. (The original composition is in 4/4 time with 2/4 phrasing ie the intro, and in between the chorus and verses). The bridge was stripped back to the main chords with the idea to allow the vocalist room to express themselves to add their own flavour.

Next a subtle but consistent beat was needed to support the melody. If you listen carefully you'll hear cymbals, triangle, chimes and an amazing snare riff that totally enhances the third verse just prior to the chorus.

The dreamy atmosphere was created by synthesisers, electric and acoustic guitars and violins. (A well played and beautifully crafted acoustic guitar adds the 'sparkle' to the song, in particular the second chorus, bridge and last chorus.)

Backing vocals were then added with Tonino again being let free to add his vocals for this segment.

Mixing the track has been done over several stages, each time allowing both Steven time to revisit his work and mine as the composer and how we thought the song should sound. We also included Tonino in the later part of the mixing getting his perspective on the mix.

Bringing together the Elements.

Mastering was completed by Paul at the Viking Lounge. This process was to bring together all our work and blend it in a fashion that would bring out the best of this song and the vocal performance. Steve issued instructions for some areas that he thought needed to be considered carefully before stabilizing and completing the finished product. After several attempts we deemed the song complete.

The film clip. I needed to portray the overall concept of the story. I hired a young budding film producer named Aaron Lyon. Together with 85p the film production company chosen for shooting the clip have created an outstanding piece of work that supports the song. The characters are played by Tonino and his gorgeous partner Maxine.
