I was in the aisle between the mixing tower and the stage that Saturday as a 15-year-old wannabe pro photographer whose dad was working the show. I'm teaching film photography to our daughter, pulled some August Jam photos from the accordion file to show her some of the work her dad used to shoot and then develop and print in his parents' bathroom darkroom, needed to check a few facts before posting the photos on www.BathroomDarkroom.com, stumbled upon this video and was able to show her the exact moment when I made an image of Jim Dandy holding the flag. Shivers went up my spine when I saw the exact spot on the film.Whomever shot and posted this film made film this dad's day by making it possible for me to take our now-16-year-old daughter back four decades for a little history lesson.Stop by BathroomDarkroom.com to take a look at some other August Jam photos. I had forgotten the smoke bombs. How about the bags and bottles of pills and hash openly hawked by people in the back near the toilets? One guy was carrying an empty bottle offering "air". What a trip. I have never smelled so much weed in my life. When the cool dampness caused the air to hang low on Friday night, it looked like we were in the smoke of a forest fire down by the front of the stage from the thousands upon thousands of burning bowls and joints. Absolutely surreal.

Yes, it was crazy, and Black Oak lifted the spirits of the crowd who had been dampened a bit by the earlier rain and humidity. People jumped to their feet.

I went with my brothers, David and Fred and late friend Mike Owen. I was 15. We drove from Brevard, N.C, got there Friday noon and spent two days dead center stage on the front row. Police confiscated many cameras, & the Governor censored coverage, declaring on national TV that "N.C will never have another outdoor concert", undoubtedly leading to its unfamiliarity. He's dead and forgotten but not this incredible experience which I've never seen matched. Well over 200,000 people attended.

I was there. (followed Black Oak anywhere) Some random (nice) guy let me stand on his cooler to get a better look...a few months later, I met the same guy (in Georgia!) Now that's quite a coincidence considering there were 200,000 people at that concert! Small world.
