This song is so cool and laid back, the original sax work is much preferred, in my opinion. The new sax (since 1985, as commented below) is too over-powering, and screams for attention. It ruins the low-key jazz mood and flow. I'm curious to know if it was Billy's idea to change it forever (I hope not!), or some idiot music executive.

That is so weird that I've sought out EVERY version of this song on the internet, and was keenly disappointed that the "newer" sax solo was maintained. As soon as I typed in "New York State of Mind," (many moons later) the first comment at the top read, "This appears to be the original sax solo, not the one used 1985 onward. Cool." So I say, again......cool!
