Lyrics:

Now we take our time, so nonchalant

And spend our nights so bon vivant

We dress our days in silken robes

The money comes

The money goes

We know it's all a passing phase

We light our lamps for atmosphere

And hang our hopes on chandeliers

We're going wrong, we're gaining weight

We're sleeping long and far too late

And so it's time to change our ways

But I've loved these days

love this tune plenty, and had so wanted to sing it in high school... but i'll settle for listening to it here on youtube, which didn't exist back in "those days"--more than 30 years ago! pardon me while i chill and reminisce...

Piano Man, Streetlife Serenade, Turnstiles, The Stranger, and Cold Spring Harbor.........his best work, and most unappreciated, even by Billy, himself. :(

He played it for me last night at MSG. Seriously. I requested it through someone. First time I think I've ever heard him play it live. Love.

Strictly a compliment: every time I've listened to "I've Loved These Days," by Billy Joel I feel he was channeling his admiration for Procol Harum. The lyrical meter, the melody, the arrangement -- all very Procol Harum. I could even "hear" Gary Brooker's voice. The song is definitely all Billy Joel -- but, I just feel that influential thread running through the tune & have often played it back to back with some of Procol Harum's finest ballads -- especially songs from 1973's Grand Hotel.
