Artie Shaw hired Billie after she was fired by Count Basie but I believe that this is the only Shaw/Holiday recording.

Billie and Helen Forrest both recorded this with Artie Shaw about three months apart. Shaw dished up the identical arrangement for both so it's an easy comparison. Forrest is no slouch with it but I think Billie still took her lunch money.

The great Billie Holiday with the mastery of Artie Shaw...how can you top this wonderful combination...of course there are others....but this was a unique combination of Billie's unique voice and phraseology, and Shaw's tempo and arrangements - makes this one of my favorites...It's too bad that discrimination in our country had an impact on the union of black and white artists playing together...but at least we have some greats to enjoy....

not sure of the year..artie needed a replacement piano player when they played boston for a weekend. my dad was with a local band at the time and they contacted him to sit in, which he did... "bricky" reed. being close-lipped, like most guys of his era, he never mentioned it to me 'til not long before he passed away..i was like "you played with artie shaw?!" he was like..well, yeah...God bless you, dazz..

I'm glad someone posted this on YouTube. Now I can stop wearing out the grooves on my old Artie Shaw LP whenever I need my "Any Old Time" fix. Truly one of the best from the big band era.
