Bill Staines has been recording folk music for over 40 years. He writes most of the songs he sings, which are tales that he has woven of Americana adventures. I made this video for a medley of two of his songs, "Sourdough" and "The Miner's Song". It's about the 1899 Alaska Gold Rush. My cousin provided me with the beautiful pictures that I used during the instrumental parts at the beginning and end of the video.

This medley is from Bill's album "Wild, Wild, Heart" from 1985. The lonesome-sounding violin is played by Stuart Shulman.

I love this song! I couldn't find lyrics on line so I had to write them out myself, old-school. Figured out how to play the melody "Sourdough" well enough - so simple and sweet. Peaceful even. And "The Miner's Song" is a great ballad. Used to listen to Bill Staines live often when I was at Cornell, then I moved west. Miss that.

@Jim Andreas, I created a video for "Alkali", as you requested, but you have Contact Lock enabled, so I can't notify you. This is all I've got. I can't even send you a Contact Request since I don't know your real YouTube username, just your "real name". Hopefully you will see this.

Thanks for the kind words, @Jim. This is one of the more difficult videos I have made. I was thinking "where am I going to find a picture of gold miners on the beach in Nome?" But I did. Just takes a little perseverance and ingenuity (and luck).

I agree, "Alkali" would be a good song to make a video for. I'll add it to my to-do list. Should be a lot easier than "Sourdough Train", lots of imagery.

Funny thing - I never heard Bill do "Alkali" though it was often requested as an encore. It is my favorite song of his repertoire. And it would make a really fascinating video!

I uploaded my video of this song almost two years ago. I haven't watched it since then, but I just did watch it again, and I have to say that I pretty much outdid myself, if I do say so myself. This is pretty good! OK, I'll stop patting myself on the back.

There's strange things done 'neath the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold, but the strangest thing that I ever did see was that night on the marge of lake lafarge when they cremated Sam Mcgee. Now Sam Mcgee was from Tennasee...
