Interesting to note that all Mercury astronauts except Schirra had English surnames.

The F-104 and the X-1 scene were i think one of my favorites in the movie, along with the B-29 takeoff, that was pretty amazing. 10/10 on the movie and the music!

Fantastic Bill Conti score and Yeager's Triumph rocks more than Rocky's theme in its sense of pride and achievement. Bill Conti has composed terrific scores throughout his career. I have many of his old soundtracks.

Yeager's Triumph is in my Top Ten of greatest movie music ever. Part of it was used by Manchester United to greet the teams when they went on to the field at Old Trafford - it crashed around the ground in a fantastic explosion of sound

I think Goldsmith's 'Under Fire' was the better score that year, but you can't argue with Conti winning the Oscar, which he deserved for some really impressive scoring during his career.

The Mercury program was over. Four years later, astronaut Gus Grissom was killed, along with astronauts White and Chaffee, when fire swept through their Apollo capsule. But on that glorious day in May 1963, Gordo Cooper went higher, farther, and faster than any other American - 22 complete orbits around the world; he was the last American ever to go into space alone. And for a brief moment, Gordo Cooper became the greatest pilot anyone had ever seen.

I've seen Kaufman's movie for the first time today. Well, it's a near-masterpiece by a very underappreciated director. But the soundtrack. Fuck. I love Bill Conti's work, but Yeager's Triumph is like a whole other level. It puts him in Basil Poledouris' category. The last third is an orgasmic ode to conquest, beauty, elevation. Just wow.
