I prefer the Etta James version. There's grit and emotion in Etta James that Beyonce just doesn't carry off here. I still like Beyonce but she doesn't do this song justice.

Sorry but this version, while clean and technically precise is light in the ass. Etta did the song live at Montreux Jazz Festival(not the duet with Dr. John) and literally blew the damn roof of the place. This song requires that the person who sings it have pain in their past. Middle-class girls from Houston don't fit the bill in this case.

Terrible rendition. That's the problem with Beyonce and all these bubblegum pop divas. They're absolutely incapable of singing naturally with real soul. It's all vocal calisthenics and excess vibrato simply to show off their range. They're basically bragging, not singing. What made Etta and all these women in the 60s so good is they weren't trying to show off, they were singing from the gut and soul. That's what these girls today don't get. They try to jazz up the classics and make them cool and all they do is end up tearing them down. That's why it's so exceedingly rare for a cover to surpass the original, and in most cases - like this - fall woefully short of the mark.
