Taken from the 1989 album Tempted and Tried. A very haunting Scottish ballad which features some brilliant musicianship from Peter Knight.

Have not heard this in years, so pleased to find it again. As mentioned it is a very haunting tune and very enigmatic. . .

FFS, you put on a folk playlist while you work and then a song gets you all upset and distracts you. I have deadlines, dammit! Beautiful, beautiful song.

This song is beautiful. And if you get the chance, see it live. The electric violin is gorgeous.

Oh I think it's a great song, very haunting. The fiddle here is the very voice of lamentation, don't you think?

There's another version of this song by Steeleye that they sang a capella. It's stronger than this verion IMHO

One of their best albums, but I have to say it's not their best song, though I love Pete Knight's solos.

According to the sleevenotes from the album, Betsy Bell and Mary Gray were tow women who fled to the Scottish Highlands to escape the plague, but they managed to catch it off a young man who was bringing them food.

Excellent, but I like Martin Carthy's solo version better.
