I think it's a reference to the dancing plague of 1518. In Strassburg, a woman started dancing in the city square, and she couldn't stop. Within 6-8 days, 30 people had joined her, and in a month it was 400. The dancers sincerely wanted to stop dancing, but claimed they couldn't. Historians think that it was most likely caused by mass hysteria or bread laced with ergot, a heavy hallucinagen.
