I read it as a singer who is trying to call to attention the horrors of war to the general public, but no one cares. It's only an entertaining news story for the people back home. "a world that loves its irony must hate the protest singer" means that the general public who love to see bloody war stories must get sick of those trying to tell them how bad it really is. the story teller is trying to tell people about the horror, but getting laughed at.

Post-war struggle and stress. "A world that loves it's irony, must hate the protest singer" Lyrical masterpiece as usual, various literal meanings and hints.

Really? I read it more as just about soldiers, war, and the meaning of it all as a whole. A man who saw things, and now he's dealing with it all as best he can. Something I can relate to very strongly.
