I think you'll find that Cilla Black is the OWNER of this song. Babs is an amazing vocalist but Cilla? Burt agrees :)

No version as good as Cher's. (And, mind you, I am not particularly a Cher fan, though I think she was much more talented than she ever got to demonstrate in her branch of the music genre - - you could hear bits of it when she'd do ballads and blues numbers on 'The Sonny And Cher Show'). But her version is by far the best one I've heard -- much better than Cilla's (which was used for the British release of the film) - - and I'll tell you why: because this was the music used over the closing credits of the *film*, 'Alfie' (perhaps the most stylish and iconic closing credits of any film ever) - - and Cher's voice projected a certain *worldliness*, and *knowingness*, of which Cilla's was the polar opposite. Cher's voice - - and delivery of this song, which so well reflected the sensibiity of that time - - said, "I understand you, pal. I'm almost that *jaded*, too". It projected the cool warmth of a compassion born of the comradery of the JADED. For that film, that was the *perfect* sound.

One of my favorite songs. Love Burt Bacharach's work. Barbra's voice. :)

The best female singer of Alfie is Barbra. Best male Johnny Mathis.

No version is as good as Cilla Black's original.

lousy arrangement loses all the emotion that Bacharach put into this song. Black Warwick and Cher capture this in part because Bacharach coached them and oversaw the arrangements.

The best version in my opinion. A voice for the ages. I even enjoyed her live version in 2000. Tough to compare the two 30 years apart, but moved just the same.

Somehow Barbra Streisand's rendition of this beautifully memorable song falls short of Cilla Black's and Dionne Warwick's. There is a certain emotional drama missing when Barbra sings, "Without love, you're nothing." It just falls a bit short.

By the greatest rendition of this song. Others sang it she owned it.
