I used to have an EP, from around 1967, with (definitely) Jersey Thursday and Sunny Goodge Street, and I'm pretty sure Ballad of a Crystal Man and Turquoise. All fantastic songs. But I can't find any reference to such an EP on Wikipedia or anywhere. Can anyone confirm my memory please?

yea I don't know why they compared Bob Dylan to him although I love both of there music Bob Dylan's music is folk country and Donovan is more inspired of the era which is love and story telling

So then along comes the great Troubador of the English countryside, thought of at one point to be another Dylan, but little did we know then that nobody could ever be another Dylan. Donovan had his day in the sun, however, and this was one of my favorite anti-war songs of the era. It is called "The Ballad of the Crystal Man" and even contains a Dylanesque harmonica solo. Donovan was also a guest in one of the early Bob Dylan documentaries.

I agree, though neither Dylan nor Donovan would likely refer to their songs as protest. Dylan especially hated the term "protest singer." Saying one is "better" than the other is all about the egos of the declarer(s). If you were around in those days, you just reveled in the scene, thankful that they were there, doing songs that expressed what we felt, and inspired us to hang in there. They gave us theme music. I used to do this song. The picking is fairly easy to learn - a great song too.

Everyone seems to be putting Donovan and Dylan head to head. The truth is, they were very different artists. Dylan, early Dylan that is, was brilliant, very cutting, very streetwise. Donovan was much more gentle, folky, otherworldy. I don't think he reached the heights that Dylan did, but they weren't really competing in the same area. Even Donovan's protest songs were in a more wistful vein, fitting his character.

Well, I think Bob Dylan was complete: voice, charisma, energy... He was like an amphetamine running free in your blood. And his broken voice it was so cool!

If you are referring to Bob Dylan as the best SINGER I'm not sure you know what singing is. If you want to claim he's the best songwriter, I'll argue the point, but SINGER?!? NO absolutely not.

Problem is people compared him to dylan. No idea why he didnt get the same recognition his songs truly are astounding.

He was very good: I really like is voice and this song (from his first songs) is lovely. But, if you'va watched "Dont look back", you know who was the best singer in 60...

I haven't heard this song since the early 80s. I didn't even know the name of it was until now. Thank you. It is a truly beautiful song.
