I'm definitely a fan of esoteric tweeters. All my speakers have some form of ribbon or motion transformer type. Such clear and distinct high notes.

I can vouch for that Fountek ribbon. I installed a pair in some Mordaunt Short MS540 speakers, the crossover comprised a single resistor to the tweeter. I dropped them in and away they went. I'd say if you fundementally have a good speaker as in build and woofer quality then buying a ribbon is an excellent way to upgrade. I was forced into my purchase and maybe i landed on my feet but these ribbons can cross over down to 2k which covers 99% of speakers i'd say.

How did you cross them and what order? Please share the crossover plan.

this sounds like tin canisters containing cow bells rolling down on a stony mountain side.. please beware when using term "Audiophile"..

Is the tower speaker beside the small speaker playing also in this video? Thanks.

The most obvious question is why you didn't use the Fountek Neocd 1.0 with F5? Did you need an L-Pad to balance the tweeter with smallish F5?I have the F5/neocd1.0 setup, but I did need an L-pad to take the edge off the brightness (1/6 of a turn off max output).

The first time I heard a ribbon tweeter they were on Golden ear Titan 7 oh my God unbelievable sound. Then we listen to the Titan 5. if they didn't look so much like a scratching post for my cat we would have bought them on the spot.

You know that you can't tell how a speaker sounds by watching a youtube video of it, right? The sounds from the speaker is being mic'd live, so there's the quality of the mic and computer ADC. Then there's the fact that youtube dumbs the signal down to 128kbps. Then there's my crappy laptop speakers playing it all back. It may be surprising that it sounds as good as it does in spite of all this, but it's certainly not a speaker audition of by any stretch of the imagination.

The crossover was a LEAP design, a second order configuration crossed over at 2,300Hz.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, you are correct about Dynaudio availability and the drivers being utilized in this pair of bookshelf speakers. Dynaudio drivers, however, still can be had on the open market online if you look hard enough. The Dynaudio portion of this speaker system is the cabinets themselves. Actually, this driver combination sounds warmer and more musical than the OEM drivers that came with these cabinets. Sorry the recording (pre ZOOM Q3) wasn't better. ♫ Happy Listening! ♫

That looks like a HiVi F5 midbass with a Fountek ribbon tweeter .Dynaudio doesn't sell raw drivers anymore :(

You're welcome. Not only is this audiophile jonra what I do for a living nearing two decades now, but it has been one of my joys in life for over three decades. I will be submitting new videos periodically and from now on I will be using a Samson ZOOM Q2 with similar sound quality and now with HD video as well. ♫ Thanks for your support. Happy listening! ♫

I'm sure a ribbon tweeter would get you where you want to be.

Hi Terry, Thanks for your comment. Yes, I figured it would help audiophiles and DIY'ers alike to find this video when doing a search and to reference the parts used. I did create the design, and by resourcing parts from an eBay seller, Parts Express, and Madisound I was able to labor together the finished speaker you see in the video. On the design, I went with a LEAP software modeled (by Madisound) 2.5k, 2nd order 2-way crossover network for the bass (rear port) reflex config. VBR, -Don

Dynaudio - HiVi - Fountek ? So you just named three driver manufacturers; I'm looking at a two way speaker ? Custom ? You built it I assume. What did you x-over at and what order high pass/low pass. Thanks Terry
