La primer aparicion de Attrition fue en diciembre de 1980 como una banda en la linea del post-punk (guitarra,bajo,bateria y voces) . En 1981 el hermano de Julia Niblock Waller incorporo sintetizadores a la banda, junto con violines y otros instrumentos y maquinas la banda fue cambiando el sonido hacia algo mas etereo y oscuro.
