Quinella

ARS' next recording was one of their best. Some of the audience that helped the group achieve the height of their popularity had moved on, and they missed out-the group was continuing to make great music. Released in 1981, this album starts out rocking harder than the last couple had and then transitions into the great pop, with an occasional country/western influence, that the group had been refining over the last couple albums. It's another classic.

The first four songs provide one of the best examples of ARS in all their glory. From the driving approach of Homesick to the musically sophisticated Quinella to the classic sound of Alien to the overdrive approach to Higher, all of the songwriting and performing skills that made ARS a classic rock and roll band are on display. The album shifts tempo at the halfway point, and with a slower pace rises to a glorious finish. The last three songs - Pretty Girl, Southern Exposure and Going to Shangri-La - show the softer side of ARS in classic style.

RIP vocalist Ronnie Hammond, drummer Robert Nix, and bassist Paul Goddard. Of the line-up on this album, guitarmen JR Cobb and Barry Bailey are still among the living but long retired from ARS. Of this line-up, only keyboardist Dean Daughtrey is currently with the ARS. The lead vocal slot is held by Rodney Justo, who preceded Ronnie Hammond as vocalist. (All the ARS players were formerly with Roy Orbison's backup band, the Candymen. Two of them, Daughtrey and Cobb, played together even earlier in the Classics IV.)

Man......we used to play in a band in the Solomon Islands....a very good covers band and this was one of the songs we actually played. Our keyboard player found and bought this "cassette" from an old Chinese shop in Chinatown Honiara.....this was roun the mid eighties.....we'd never heard of ARS in our lives.....this was the first song we heard on the tape and immediately decided it was going to be part of our repertoire....I dont even think we listened to the rest of the cassette. Over time the cassette got lost and that was the end of it!....but mind you this song was already down pat and we played it exactly like this!!....I basically forgot how the original sounded as the only time any of us ever heard it was during practice for 4 odd minutes.......Now some 20 odd years later......our keyboard player once again found this!!!!!.....bringing back memories of the good days.......we are now granpas.....but still loving the music and grooving to da beat.......hearing this again is more than enough inspiration to have one more go!!!! Thankyou ARS

Hearing this tune makes me sad that these guys couldn't continue making records. This was when music was music.

What a great sound! Only ARS. You know it's ARS within the first couple bars of the song. Killer sound that only they could do. One of my favorite bands when I first heard them back in the seventies... and they still are to this day.
