The Songs of Nick Drake: Way to Blue http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00s06v5

Filmed at the Barbican in January 2010 and curated by Joe Boyd, producer and general champion of Nick Drake, 90 minutes of performance highlights from a diverse but renowned cast of modern day troubadours.

Presenting their own interpretations of Drake's songs are Vashti Bunyan, Green Gartside, Lisa Hannigan, Scott Matthews, Teddy Thompson, Krystle Warren, Robyn Hitchcock, Kirsty Almeida and Harper Simon.

A celebration of the songs of Nick Drake, the concert features the original orchestrations of Nick's friend, the late Robert Kirby. It includes a house band anchored by Danny Thompson, the legendary bassist who played on Drake's first two albums.

Highlights include Teddy Thompson's version of the timeless River Man, Lisa Hannigan's haunting and compelling version of Black Eyed Dog, Krystle Warren's bluesy take on Time Has Told Me, Robyn Hitchcock's psychedelic spin on Parasite and Neil MacColl's accomplished rendition of the classic Northern Sky.

During his lifetime Nick Drake found little mainstream success, but since his death at the untimely age of 26 in 1974 he has been revered as one of the most influential and important English songwriters of his era.

Fantastic job by lovely Lisa. I can tell she is pouring her heart into this and it gets better each time you hear it. I'm sure Nick would be happy with her interpretation. The orchestral arrangement is lovely too.

i absolutely love this cover. not sure what everyone's issue with it is. i also love her cover of black eyed dog. i'm a big fan of Nick Drake, and i think Lisa's covers of his music are fantastic tributes to the man and his music.

In response to the lack of emotion some folks are talking about, it sounds to me like this arrangement's key is a little low for Ms. Hannigan. I've seen the entire concert and wasn't impressed at all, Lisa being the only exception. It seems thrown together and what's up with the "artists" reading the lyrics while performing? They couldn't take the time to master the lyrics? It seems quite disrespectful to Nick's work and the audience. I've seen/heard recordings of low budget Nick Drake tribute concerts on here with far truer artists than most of these folks (again, Lisa being the standout).

This is certainly better than Black Eyed Dog, but lacks the emotion that ND's original had, except for the last minute.

The saxophone in Nick's original is corny. This is a better arrangement, and Lisa's is not an easy voice for musical illiterates to appreciate.

I love Lisa, obviously. but i hate this cover. And Black Eyed Dog, too. And I don't know Nick Drake but from what I heard, he souds cool.

you don't need so many musicians. and far less such a voice, or such a singer. just a guitar and a pocketful of loneliness.

Since it's written by Nick, he has the most clear image of the song. I personally think that's the difference between this version and the original one.

I like Lisa's voice on this - very sultry - is a shame they missed out the sax though.

Great band, but the voice does not do this song much justice. This song has so much meaning to me and I honestly think that Nick poured so much of himself into this song. I love it but she ruined it.
