Ashokan is a town in the USA, 100 miles north of New York City. The Ashokan Farewell was written in the style of a Scottish fantasy, in 1982 by Jay Ungar. It became famous when filmmaker Ken Burns used it in a documentary film two years later 'The Civil War'. For more info on the composer, see:

I've just been asked to play it with a local concert band, so thought I'd record it whilst practising and see what people thought. Comments welcomed (nice ones especially..).

Thank you for putting Ashincon farewell on your channel on YouTube. I am a blind person, a "violinist, and have lost my violin teacher. However, because I do not have the money to pay anyone right now, and he had started teaching me at Ashokan farewell, I found this violin solo. I sat and listened before I could get all the patterns, and I want to thank you, because I am learning that

This was amazing. I was scrolling through youtube looking for good versions to listen to while I prepared myself to play this in my violin recital. I stumbled upon this and I'm glad I did!

This song reminds me of the times I was a young child when I would be visiting my grandma (RIP) and my uncle, when they lived on an old country road. Wake up in the morning to my uncle playing this on his fiddle, and the smell of eggs & bacon in the air that my grandma was cooking. Good times. Thanks for the upload and personal memories, you did a great job playing this!

Your introduction states it is in the style of a scottish fantasy, it is in fact based on a scottish lament

It shoulda been written about 150 years ago.Very hauntingly beautiful song. Perfectly describes the longing that the troops on both sides must've felt for home.

Mike small niggle about the decoration you use in the main theme in the last bar of D before going to G , but really, a beautiful version - played like that you dont miss the other instruments. I am a squeeze box player, dabbled with the violin but never found a voice - you have an extremely music al voice hence you are able to convey this beautiful tune , just with your fiddle, very nice indeed. Cheers from Sydenham NIgel

Wonderful! What a beautifully haunting tune. I didn't realize it was a modern song, it seems to tie us to our heritage.
