I met Ariana the day of the show. In the green room, we ran her other song. We didn’t run “The Ladies Who Lunch” until soundcheck, before she dashed off the do two shows of HAMILTON. I wasn’t worried; we had emailed a bit back and forth, and between what I knew of her beforehand, her vibrant and quirky personality that came through via email, and what Maggie said, I knew she’d be an all-star with her songs.But wow, I wouldn’t have guessed that I’d be telling Steven - a little drunk and very exhausted on a 4am train home, and then several mores times in the days that followed - that I’ve finally heard someone perform “The Ladies Who Lunch” and escape the long shadow that Elaine Stritch cast over the song. During soundcheck I had a huge grin on my face because I was floored at what I was hearing. At the performance I had the same stupid grin, but this time it was because I was relishing in her performance and grateful to be a part of it. It’s a thrilling interpretation of the song, and if George is going to be in Maggie’s production of FOLLIES, Ariana needs to be her production of COMPANY. #sondheim #musicaltheatre
