At least three ways. Players who use a downpicking style like this fella usually use their index or middle finger nail to strum. That said, I've played steel string guitar for years without using any picks or nails.

Yes sir.I understand.I guess the Melodic style just isn't my cup of tea or mug of beer for that matter.Thank you for the clarification.

Frailing, knocking, rapping, clawhammer, stroke-style, down-stroke — they're all names for the same technique. Ken Perlman's style goes by the more specific name "melodic clawhammer."

I'd call it Frailing. The Clawhammer style played by Ken Perlman,Dan Levenson, and Mike Iverson sounds somewhat different. This style has more "fire" in my humble opinion and more along the lines of what the Costello's teach. Not boring to listen to by any means!
