I love Angela, and of course her voice is always sublime. For this piece, however, her performance is a bit heavy handed. The beauty of Handel's aria is in its simplicity. A bit too much sub-glottal pressure and weight to the line. This is not Traviata with all of the vocal pyrotechnics and conversely the rawness necessary to portray the rise and fall a joyful courtesan (I bring this up as I believe Angela is the only modern soprano who has even remotely approached the artistry of the Golden Age sopranos in the role of Violetta - ah, why wasn't I born about forty years earlier?). This piece personifies the broken spirit of loss and captivity without the melodrama of Romantic opera. Just let the voice "be."Incidentally, DiDonato does a perfect version of this.

Part of me thinks this isn't the right rep. for her, since her voice is a big 'big' for Handel and part of me loves her singing this. For one thing, she maintains the core of her sound throughout, more than other singers I have heard singing the piece. And I just love the color of Gheorghiu's voice. Like well seasoned oak, with sweetness. Just so beautiful.
