Miembro de Duran Duran, grupo de éxito en la década de los 80 llegó a la formación a través de un anuncio en la prensa en el que la banda buscaba un guitarrista.El grupo fue fundado por los compañeros de colegio Nicholas Bates y Nigel Taylor en 1978. Su nombre fue ocurrencia de Nigel (quien luego decidió usar su segundo nombre: John), que lo sacó del malévolo personaje del clásico film de Roger Vadim, Barbarella (1962). En 1985, abandonó el grupo y colaboró con otras formaciones como Thunder. En solitario grabó Thunder (1987) y Dangerous (1990). En 2002 los componentes originales de Duran Duran se volvieron a unir para grabar un nuevo disco y para realizar giras.
