Live performance has always been an important element of Alternative TV's work and I don't mean playing endless sets of the same songs in bleak toilets up and down the well trodden roads of post-punk UK. It's on stage where ATV's songs have developed and grown. Where we have laughed, cried and sometimes been so far out on a limb that a flying bottle probably did knock some sense into us!

The reason Alternative TV started in the first place was so that the loud mouth, opinionated editor of UK Punk's premier fanzine, Sniffin' Glue, could have a new soapbox to shout his message to the punk world - "Change, change and change!" The stage was where it all happened, the records could only be a document of the progress. The live gig was the place where the supposed "punk prophet" could, and sometimes did, have his detractors shout right back at him! ATV's early gigs were certainly events. Ones that challenged the idea of what punk was supposed to be and the roles of both audience and performer.

Alternative TV's first run eventually ended in 1981 after glorious failed attempts at both the avant-garde and power pop. Our comebacks in the 1980's settled for bleak lyrical reflection and navel gazing. It wasn't until 1995 the band finally came to terms with their past and realised that playing great old songs doesn't necessary mean you're stuck in the past. ATV live again!
