A beloved song by both children and adults. From "The Blue Idol" album in 2002.

Altan brings the beauty of the Donegal fiddlers and singers to audiences. They believe that Irish traditional music IS a modern music. "The Blue Idol" features uillean pipes, bouzouki, fiddle, and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's voice. That is enough to cause delight to all who hear. Enjoy!!!

Uncle Rat Lyrics as sung by Altan:

Uncle Rat went out to ride

Kitty alone, Kitty alone

Uncle Rat went out to ride

Kitty alone and I

Uncle Rat went out to ride

Sword and buckle by his side

Ma cax macari duck and a dil

Kitty alone and I

Lady Mouse, will marry me?

Kitty alone, Kitty alone

Lady Mouse, will marry me?

Kitty alone and I

Lady Mouse, will marry me?

Ask my Uncle Rat, says she

Ma cax macari duck and a dil

Kitty alone and I

Uncle Rat, will you marry Lady Mouse?

Kitty alone, Kitty alone

Uncle Rat, will you marry Lady Mouse?

Kitty alone and I

Uncle Rat, will you marry Lady Mouse?

Yes, kind sir, and half my house

Ma cax macari duck and a dil

Kitty alone and I

Lady Mouse, where will the wedding be?

Kitty alone, Kitty alone

Lady Mouse, where will the wedding be?

Kitty alone and I

Lady Mouse, where will the wedding be?

Ask my Uncle Rat, says she

Ma cax macari duck and a dil

Kitty alone and I

Uncle Rat, where will the wedding be?

Kitty alone, Kitty alone

Uncle Rat, where will the wedding be?

Kitty alone and I

Uncle Rat, where will the wedding be?

Up at the top of a holly tree

Ma cax macari duck and a dil

Kitty alone and I

I think my grandson was 3 when he started giggling & said, "That's silly! They can't have a wedding in the top of a tree." He had been listening & following through the entire song! This is "Uncle Rat" by Altan. Enjoy!

This may sound silly, but this is how I always followed this song: The singer is a little mouse lad who wants to marry Lady Mouse. His best man is a kitty who shadows him the whole song. There are other creatures that are friends of the singing mouse. Their names are Macax and Macari (I imagined they were twin foxes). A duck also comes to the wedding with dill for Lady Mouse to use as a bouquet.

Part 2 This really isn't what I wanted to find. I WANT to know what it means! I can't find it in Google, Yahoo, Ixquick searches. I'm sorry. I am NOT happy with "it's a silly song with silly sounds", but so far that is all I can find. I did find the original song was being sung over 500 years ago! Bet your daughter will love this. Thanks for commenting & if you ever find out what the lyrics mean, could you please update me? My best to you, Moppet

I have been on all sorts of sites trying to find a meaning. (My grandson is now 11. He's loved this since he was 4. It's a fast song & I was amazed when he asked me "How many people do you think they could have at the wedding? The tree might break." He was sure following the lyrics!) ok, I've read a knitting blog, mudcat's blog on Froggie song,& several other sites. The best I can come up with is that it's NOT gaelic, since they don't have "x" in general. It's a silly song w/silly sounds. cont.

@bookgirlforlife Yes. I don't think I've heard a song that I don't like by them (or her). I love this song so much. My grandson likes it also. He is amazed at a wedding in a tree... My very best to you. Thanks for leaving a comment, Moppet (Barbara)
