From Wikipedia: "Alley Oop" is a song written by Dallas Frazier. The song, heavily inspired by the 1932 comic strip of the same name, was first recorded by Frazier as a country tune in 1957. The Hollywood Argyles recorded the song in 1960 and hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Also in 1960, The Dyno-Sores released a version that went to #59 on the Hot 100 chart and Dante & The Evergreens released a version that went to #15 on the Hot 100 chart.

I believe the first version was by The Pre Historics a Coasters sound alike vocal group. But you may be right. Still I'm certain that the Pre Historics version predated Argyles. Wikipedia says that Dallas Frazier first recorded it as a country Western song in 1966.

Two weeks earlier on May 30th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #15 and spent 13 weeks in the Top 100... It was written by Dallas Frazier; who also wrote the Oak Ridge Boys's 1981 hit record "Elvira", which reached #1 on Billboard's Country chart... R.I.P. Mr. Clark...

When I was a kid we had a old Atwater-Kent console radio in the basement and when this song came on I'd turn the volume up loud and the whole cabinet would literally shake on those base notes. The Argyles version wouldn't do that- which is why I like this one better.

I can't help but believe that Dante's singing style on this track may have influenced the early Bob Dylan. The drawl, pronunciation, the speed, the tone, inflection, it's all there. This version of "Alley Oop" is the best for me. There's a charm, Dante's vocals are unique, the song has a mystique the others simply don't have. Of course, "Time Machine" is also great.

This is great stuff, The Beach Boys also did it, though I think it was an LP only release and in my opinion was the weakest of them all. Hollywood Argyles is a little more polished, but I like the rawness of this one and the Dynasores version as well.
