Pianist:

The Emory & Henry College Concert Choir sang this for Randall Thompson when he visited in 1981. Interestingly, he said this was not a "joyful" song, but melancholy, as he wrote in while the Nazis were trying to overtake Europe in WWII. (He also DID NOT want a "breath" after the "first Alleluia", as every choir does, saying he wanted a continuous, uninterrupted phrase.

Currently I'm assisting a certain christian church in Zimbabwe in alleviating their choral performance at their annual festivals. I think as a learning process I wont mind issuing this piece for their next year festival. Can somebody provide me with the sheet music? This is truly a divine masterpiece.

It's heartwarming to see these "Easterners" taking so well to "Western" music. I love the restraint shown in this performance.

I agree with you Robert Jones, I,ve sung this many times in the past with the Pontarddulais Male Choir, and it,s vital that the high notes are sung in tune, none more so that when you are being marked in competitive events such as Eisteddfodau. It is an exceptionally beautifull piece when sung as written by Thompson.

Sensitive interpretation, and well sung except of course for those few high notes that weren't quite high enough. The conductor did a great job varying the tempo and volume as per R. Thompson's directions, and the choir followed him perfectly, unless you insist on a true ppp at the beginning. (This was more pianissimo than pianississimo.)

Nice. I sang this song when I was in high school. I love it.

The entire piece is written in a peaceful, calm, regulated pattern. The result is a prayer on the breath in the natural rhythm of the listener. Listen holistically and see if you don't agree.

Because Randall Thompson hates people who breath oxygen... seriously he doesn't write in breath marks, and rarely ever leaves unnoticeable room between anything... not that I don't love singing his pieces.

I wish there was just a little more male voices in the first half.... Not much more just a little more.
