I seen her live at the Louisville Palace back around 2012. There wasn't a lot of dry eyes after she finished this song.

This is such a heart wrenching story and such a beautiful haunting song. My grandsons are 5 7 and I can't help imagining the torment these children and their parents went through.

I lived in this area as a young boy and hunted in this area many times. My Pap used to tell me the story of these children when we were preparing to hunt these woods. It always gave me an eerie feeling when we used to go there to say the least. Allison brought tears to my eyes when i first listened to this heart wrenching song . She once said it was a very difficult song to do because of its extremely sad content and almost didn't go through with recording it! I am so glad she did, it will always be special to me

If you wanna see a beautiful place go check some beautiful sites take a trip to where this happened. I go there every year for a family reunion and visit the woods. Yes I am related lol and also be sure to stop in Pavia to see his old store.

This happened about 45 minutes or so from where I grew up and presently live. I have visited the memorial which stands where they were found as well as there graves located just short distance away in the town of Lovely PA. When one thinks of the church bells ringing throughout the towns as far off as Bedford pleading for help it brings chills to me. I pray that God wrapped his arms around these little boys and comforted them throughout this ordeal. RIP Joseph and George you have not been forgotten.

I love songs that don't let you forget those who would not want to be forgotten. This is a sad song with a beautiful melody and from what I understand, based on a true story. Thank you for sharing this. I haven't heard this in a long time. :-( Sad song.

The pictures are beautiful, although they have nothing to do with the Appalachian Mountains, or the Pennsylvania hollows where the boys were lost (where I happen to live). Our area has no natural lakes or ponds, no boreal forest and of course no ocean coastline. This beautiful song was written for Alison Krauss by Julie Lee of Lovely, Pennsylvania, a few miles from where the incident happened.

Alison Krauss has an incredible voice. Normally, I detest lyrics involving christian themes. However, she performs them to where I can admire the music. (Not to mention she's done music for one of my favorite childhood movies, O Brother Where Art Thou).

Jacob’s Dream is based on a true story about two boys, Joseph, aged five, and George Cox , aged six, who were lost in the in the dense forest of Spruce Hollow, in the Allegheny Mountain region of Pennsylvania. Two little boys lost in the wilderness of the Allegheny Front in April 1856 brought a thousand men from near and far to search the twisting hollows and steep ridges. For two desperate weeks, they hunted in vain until a man named Jacob Dibert had three dreams, in which he found them.

really- why would he then take them someone there why not let nature hide the crime? how can you kill someone who is frozen- it was April- snow on ground they were missing 10 days- add it up. poor Jacob - still being blamed.

Part ballad part ghost tale makes this one powerful song with the delivery of a freight train bearing down on you at 100 mph, Tragic and hauntingly moving and who better to sing it than Allison.. this shows the true power of what music can do us. Time to break out my Martin and learn this, though I can't sing worth a crap i'll play along with the record... great post and thanks for sharing..

I saw Alison discuss the moment the writer of the song first sang it for her. After the first verse she said to herself "Oh, this is going to end badly."
