Hey Jim, a friend who's an accomplished banjo player (enough so he picked with Johnny years ago) told me that was Johnny's comment. He told Max he received that comment many times about his tuning. So, it's not my comment really. It came through Max from Johnny. ;-)

Not sure what you mean by difficult. The Eb tuning John Hartford used is exactly like standard G tuning, only tuned down a few intervals. The chord shapes are the same. The low tuning slackens the strings and adds sustain to most banjos. In some sense this actually makes playing out of it easier, as you don't have work as hard for resonance.

@jmart94tito John tuned DOWN to Eb (flat). He used his own brand of John Pearce JH heavy strings. Apparently a difficult tuning for banjo. :)
