My interpretation of this song is this. I love it by the way. If she had given up, thought that everything she had believed in and hoped for could not happen, she'd be "joining you". A person who had given up before her. He didn't have as much faith as her. He just decided there was no future, we were defenseless, the world as we knew it was going to end. Powerful. Makes me cry almost every time I hear it. She didn't give up, never quit, wanted him to believe as much in this future as she does. That's all we need honestly. Someone to convince us that we're here for a reason.

Yeah, she's referencing a person who wanted to kill herself and she's saying if we were all these things that are supposed to define us that make us want to kill ourselves (our labels, our rejections, outcomes, guilt etc.) then she would kill herself too, because she has all of these things too. But we're NOT all of these things and to avoid becoming these labels and to avoid the feeling of total desperation, we need to "find like minded companions" and we need to learn to deflect these labels

un altro caso in cui la versione acustica è decisamente più bella di quella normale

I've listened to this hundreds of times over the years, but I was sitting in traffic one rainy evening last week, and this song came on. I think it was the first time I actually understood the profoundness of the message. I know it's all interpretation and "to each their own" blah blah, but she's essentially saying that we're not defined by what we do, what we've done, or by what we have and if we think we are we'll never discover who we actually are. I was so blown away by this realisation!

I've been to her concert in Johannesberg South Africa years ago. It was the best experience I have ever had. I remember singing along to her "Jagged little Pill" album while studying for my high school finals :-)

My favourite song off that album, one of the most beautiful songs ever made. Just pure perfection. Would love to witness Alanis live one day. One of the great musicians of our generation.
