TW3 (That Was Whe Week That Was) - a 1960's British TV programme that weekly satarised the latest news and ran for several years. A notable exception was the programme that followed JFK's assassination in 1963. They did proceed with the programme, however it was curtailed to 20 minutes. It respected instead of satirised the tragic event, much like the events of 11 September 2001 would be exempted from tasteless humour, at least at first by other programmes.

According to his mother in a biography, they didn't have it nearly that bad off when he was growing up.

al stewart is one of the best songwriters and lyricists of all time. this song is quite similar to american pie, al stewart probably had that in mind (the day that buddy holly died). "i came up to london when i was 19, with a courderoy jacket and a head full of dreams". i love that line :)

You'd have to understand British history and culture to really understand most of the lyrics. Even so, this is one of Al Stewart's very best.
