This song was about a black wet nurse who raised Nothern and Southern white babies. Many of them were breast fed and cared for by these women and they never lost the love they felt for these post slavery women. Although society frowned upon the concept of intergration back then, many of the richer white families had a Mammy who nurtured the children until they were old enough to go to formal schools of higher learning. Written by Joe Young and Sam M. Lewis with music by Walter Donaldson.
