Brilliant. This was made not long before he died. His voice was still superb.

Simply rendered for a simple song with a simple melodic line...

To the best of my knowledge that is a true story. But in addition to being a startling talent, Jolson was a curious fellow. Someone once asked, I believe Georgie Jessel, if Al ever mentioned retirement. Jessel responded that Jolson's thought was that everyone else in show biz should retire so he would be the only one left. I'm sure Jolson's comment pleased Laine as Jolson was his idol. Frankie talked of seeing Al perform when Frankie was a boy and how that inspired him to become a singer.

I read that Al Jolson once said that Frankie Laine would put them all out of business.

@cameronchatterton: this is not only the last song Jolson recorded.,...but it also happens to be the last song that Stephen Foster composed before his death. Very fitting, don't you think?

It seems only appropriate that Jolson's last recordings were Steven Foster songs, songs sung by minstrels since before the civil war and here sung by the last minstrel.

I remember buying that album (it was released just after Jolson's death) and playing it until it was worn out. As I recall, it was one of the very first vinyllbums.

It is in fact a great song. Although I love Al Jolson I prefer this song with Marilyn Horne. It comes sweeter. Alvamir Pinto
