Al Jolson (May 28, 1886 -- October 23, 1950) was an American singer, comedian and actor. In his heyday, he was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer"

"Alabamy Bound" is a Tin Pan Alley tune written in 1924, with music by Ray Henderson and words by Buddy DeSylva and Bud Green. Written for the vaudeville stage it was made famous by Al Jolson. "Alabamy Bound" opens with:

I'm Alabamy bound

I'm Alabamy bound

They'll be no heebie-jeebies hanging 'round

Just gave the meanest ticket man on earth

All I'm worth to put my tootsies in an upper berth

Just hear the choo-choo sound

I know that soon we're gonna cover ground

And then I'll holler so the world will know

Here I go, (repeat)

This is almost definitely taken from the Kraft Music Hall show of January 29, 1948. The accompanying band is Lou Bring's, as others have mentioned. It's a live performance, and therefore obviously not the rare Decca studio recording, In 1939 Jolie was hosting his Lifebuoy program, but there is no record of him ever performing Alabamy Bound on that show or any other, in that year.

So if this is Kraft Music Hall with Levant, it cannot be a 1939 version. ???

yes this is definitely not 1936 but from the kraft music hall radio show as Sally mentioned can also be found on the Decca album THE WORLDS GREATEST ENTERTAINER get it at the Al Jolson International Society if not Amazon. Lou Brings orchestra and arrangements were as incredible as the great star himself. All the albums from the Kraft Music Hall are live and great perfomances. As for Django, whoever that is, I DOUBT IT.

@sally8284, this was Lou Bring's band from Al Jolson's stint hosting the Kraft Music Hall in 1947. ALABAMY BOUND was recorded for Decca by Jolie, same arrangement, but not released. However, it is on an Australian CD called ALTERNATIVE AL if you want to search for it.

Django did it better. And by better, I mean best.

Great song and one of the most melodic and lively ever, especially that musical interlude mid-tune.
